Sensitivity Reader Services

What is a sensitivity reader?

Have you been told you might want a sensitivity for your MS, but aren’t totally sure what that really means? Basically, a sensitivity reader is a person who reads for instances of biases or prejudice for writers dealing with marginalized groups in their manuscripts. This is especially useful for writers who have created stories about characters with experiences outside their own, since they may not be aware of when they are displaying biases or negative language. The goal of the sensitivity reader is not to edit your MS in terms of craft (unless that is another service they offer), but to help you assess the accuracy and sensitivity of your representation.

So, what services do you offer?

These ones:

Reader Report // flat fee of $150 for MS below 80,000 words

This will be a modified version of the reader report services as described under the Full Manuscripts page. A reader report for sensitivity reading will be a short, 1-2 page summary of general issues concerning the representation in your MS. The report will comment on overall issues and provide the reasoning behind suggested changes, but will not be as in-depth as the options below. Anything above 80,000 words is the flat fee of $150 plus $0.002 per additional word.

Edit Letter // flat fee of $200 for MS below 80,000 words

The edit letter for a sensitivity read will differ slightly from a regular MS edit letter in that it will outline issues with representation chapter by chapter as they are found. Again, this will include background on the reasoning for the suggested changes and issues with the representation. As with the regular edit letter, an MS that is over 80,000 words will be charged the flat fee of $200 plus $0.004 per additional word.

In-MS Comments // flat fee of $250 for MS below 80,000 words

In-MS comments for sensitivity reads will be focused, of course, on issues concerning representation of diverse groups. These will also be on top of the edit letter described above. This will be the most useful way to be given specific examples of issues with representation, as I will be able to comment on them as I see them. Any MS above 80,000 words will be charged $0.007 per additional word.

So, what issues do you specialize in?

To begin, I will ONLY read YA and MG manuscripts, since that is my area of expertise. I have life experience in the majority of the issues I can read for, as I am a pansexual woman who struggles with anxiety and depression, and has also dealt with PTSD in the past due to sexual assaults and rape. I also got my bachelor’s degree in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
As for the issues I consider myself an expert in, they are as follows:

– LGBT+

– Mental health (esp. anxiety, depression, OCD, and PTSD)

– Body image/weight issues

– Feminism

– General women’s issues (i. e. sexual assault/violence, etc.)

Editorial Services

Reader Report // flat fee of $150 for MS below 80,000 words

If you’re looking for a shorter summary (about 1-2 pages) about what’s working and not working in your story including comments on plot, characters, and more, this option is for you. I’ll also be commenting on market fit. A reader report is similar to what is written on submissions from publishers’ slush piles. It’s a more general report on craft than an edit letter, which I’ll be describing below. Anything above 80,000 words is the flat fee of $150 plus $0.002 per additional word.

Edit Letter // flat fee of $200 for MS below 80,000 words

If what you’re after is an in-depth look at craft including comments on pacing, characters, voice, plot, etc. that’s 5+ pages, this is the option to choose. If you’re less self-confident about your revising skills, need a little more direction on revisions, or don’t have a critique partner, this might be the better option for you. The edit letter will provide more in depth suggestions on where your MS needs to be polished. This does not include in-MS comments, however. An MS that is over 80,000 words will be charged the flat fee of $200 plus $0.004 per additional word.

In-MS Comments // flat fee of $250 for MS below 80,000 words

If you want the most in-depth look at your MS, this is the option for you. In addition to the edit letter, as described above, you’ll get in-line commentary via Word’s comment feature on smaller-scale issues as I read them. This includes anything from moments that gave me “all the feels” to places where I was confused to places I started getting bored. Any MS above 80,000 words will be charged $0.007 per additional word.

Partials

In addition to full-MS critiques and sensitivity reads, I also offer partial reads for 50 pages of an MS. All pricing will be the same for both regular editing and sensitivity reads.

  1. Reader reports will be $1 per page
  2. Edit letters will be $2 per page
  3. In-MS critiques will be $3 per page

Aside from partials, another small critique I do is comments and suggestions for 1-2 sentence pitches. Have a Twitter pitch contest coming up? I’ll help you craft your Tweets at $5 per edit round.

Payments

Payments will be sent via either PayPal or Venmo. I will give out my PayPal email when I accept a project. Half of the payment will be sent at project acceptance, with the remaining half to be paid after the edits are sent.
