August TBR

New month, new TBR! This summer has actually been a pretty sparse month in terms of new releases I want to read, which is unusual for me for the summer. Still, there are a few books I’m looking forward to that are coming out, plus a couple I want to read that are older releases.

August Releases

  • The Looking Glass | Janet McNally – This book is about a girl whose sister disappears, and there’s mystery and ballet. I love books about dance even though I have never danced, plus there’s something about a book of fairytales?? So it should be good.
  • These Rebel Waves | Sara Raasch – I never read Raasch’s SNOW LIKE ASHES books, so this will be my first experience with her. I’ve been on a slight ocean book kick this year with TO KILL A KINGDOM and SEA WITCH, so I’m hoping this pirate book continues a great trend.
  • Seafire | Natalie C. Parker – I liked Parker’s debut, BEWARE THE WILD, and have been interested in reading more from her. This is yet another sea-worthy fantasy, this time about a group of all female pirates. Apparently it’s not as queer as I thought it would be, which makes me a bit unsure if I want to read it? But we’ll see if it’s worth sticking around for.
  • Finding Yvonne | Brandy Colbert – This book is about a teen violinist who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant. I’m most interested in the musical aspect of this book, as the synopsis on Goodreads notes that Yvonne realizes that she might not be good enough at violin to go to a conservatory after high school, which is something I somewhat dealt with when I was a teen musician.

Other Books

  • Ruin & Rising | Leigh Bardugo – I LOVED SHADOW & BONE and thought the second book was good as well, so I definitely want to continue this series. I have started this one a bit, but I’m a little worried because so far it’s kind of boring and I REALLY do not want an Alina/Darkling romance, which I’m pretty sure is a thing that happens. Still, I will probably finish it sometime between the ARCs of ARC August.
  • Strange the Dreamer | Laini Taylor – I just checked this out from the library and also liked DOSAB, so hopefully this will be good. It’s very long and intimidating, though.
  • Uprooted | Namoi Novik – I got interested in this one when I started seeing everyone try to trade for SPINNING SILVER. #booksfortrade is surprisingly sometimes a good way to discover books and for book publicity? You always know what’s going to be big because everyone wants it on #booksfortrade. Anyway. I started this and think I might end up liking it, but as of the first chapter, the writing style seems weird and is making me feel a bit disconnected from the story. So we shall see.
